Porsche will surely be keeping everything crossed right now. It is in uncharted territory in launching a new model into a full-on global recession. I'm talking about the new Panamera (full details in the Feb issue). This is as big a departure for the company as the Cayenne was. And the timing couldn't be worse. Still, if anyone can weather the storm, then we know the boys from Stuttgart can. Wisely, they're playing down the sales expectations, saying that they'll be quite happy, thank you, with just 20,000 cars sold, a sales prediction they will surely achieve. Of course, the first challenge is to build a car that people actually want to buy and, judging by some of the opinions expressed and the internet forum tittle-tattle, it's going to be an uphill battle. Personally I'm reserving judgement until I see, and drive, the car. Looking at the dimensions,; no higher than a 911, 21inches longer and five inches wider, it's certainly going to be imposing on the road! I can't wait. Perversely, perhaps, I'm also looking forward to driving the Cayenne diesel. This New Year that's upon us is going to be a very interesting one for the boys from Stuttgart - and equally for all us Porsche enthusiasts and we look forward to sharing our experiences with you all. Here's to 2009....
